A breakthrough in the shock treatment of psychosis was achieved in 1927. The neuropsychiatrist was Manfred J. Sakel. He was an internist in the Lichterfelde Hospital of Mental diseases. He used insulin to provoke a superficial coma in a morphine addicted woman.

ECT may cause brain damage: Says the Food and Drug Administration Policy. It is supposed to be a 'shocking' treatment. This treatment has sprouted a lot of debates in the medical world. It is practised at some of the clinics. The argument is that it may cause permanent memory loss.
