About this trail:
This is a list of some cool sites I've run across in the past. For the most part they deal with music and making music, but that's not 100% of what this trail is about.
1
This site is all about identifying songs by singing into a microphone. How does that work? Well, first someone else sings the song and registers it into their database, and then you sing it and it finds it by comparing it to the other person's song. You don't have to SING it, you can just hum it. It's an interesting concept.
2
This is a similar concept, only it doesn't work with your singing. Basically, anytime you can't identify a song, you can run the song through this program by using a microphone or by using your sound card's output for the mic input in your Audio properties settings. It'll then analyze the waveform output against the database and will identify it. There's a separate program made specifically for adding to the database. For the most part, this is an unobtrusive way to identify music, even songs from an online radio stream.
3
This page lets you search for that song Much like Midomi does... only it provides a few more search tools at your disposal. Namely you can tap out the Rhythm, or figure out the "Contour" of the song... For the Contour, you take the first note and then look at the second note... is it the same, higher or lower than the first? And the next note is the same, higher or lower than the previous note? Continue like that as far as you can without worrying about how long the note lasts or rests.... It's surprisingly accurate, and plus it'll provide you with a midi version of the song in question so you can be sure you got the right one...
4
This is basically a very simple rhythm search for songs... it works pretty well and is simple to add to (if you happen to know something that isn't in the database) It can be fun just trying to "Stump the band" though...
5
This is an interesting idea... With this, you can try your hand at singing without having to suffer the insults of Simon from American Idol. All you need is a headset microphone (headset preferred to avoid getting an echo/feedback from the speakers) and the willingness to sing... You can also find other people to be "fans" of, or if you are any good, you may attract fans of your own.
6
This is one of those sites that ages ago, I dreamed we'd be using in the future, and here it is... So how does it work? Well, you upload your sounds (instruments whatever), and then you can use the web interface to freely remix the song any way you like...
it's still mostly about the "remixing" than actual song creation, but it's pretty close to what I imagined... If they ever make it so you can easily add instruments to play any notes you like this will REALLY take off.

This is a great site which again, utilizes the ability of flash to take input from your microphone. If you've ever wanted to do a podcast but don't know how to go about it, this place is your first step. Just plug in your mic, go to the odeo studio, record your audio, and then you can paste the Odeo player in your blog... If you already have some audio that you'd like to spread around, you can directly upload that, and likewise, you'll be able to post that to your blog, myspace, or whatever...
8
This is sort of a branch off of Odeo.com. With it, you can easily record your own video to send across the web. Much like the others, this records totally over the web, with no storage needed on your end, but you do need a broadband connection to make the most out of it.
9
I've been using this site ever since it was called AudioScrobbler but I think it will do a lot better as last.fm instead. The idea is simple: You download a small plugin for your favorite media player (or use the last.fm player) and then whenever you wish, you can keep track of all the songs you listen to. I'm sure you're saying to yourself "That's an invasion of privacy!" or "That's spyware!"... no, all it does is record the song title, artist, and the time you listened to it... It doesn't know if you're playing it on MP3, listening to it from CD, or listening to your own personal Radio station. They also don't even keep the "log" of all this info for very long... it just gets added into the stats... Also, you can wipe your stats clean if you feel like it, and you're completely in control of whether or not your songs are being "Scrobbled".

I'm pretty sure everyone knows about Pandora. It's a great way to find all about new music. If you have flash 8 installed instead of flash 9, you can even find the mp3s in your cache (Flash 9 fixed this 'hole' though).
11
This site is quite a bit like pandora, but this site focuses more on the mood and genre than pandora. You can start by choosing a genre of music, or click anywhere in the mood square to show how energetic and positive or dark and calm it is (or anywhere inbetween)... You can also choose the tempo between fast/slow or how much you'd want to dance to it... Lots more options to select the music here, but it's a lower quality sound...
12
This is a service sorta like Pandora. You pick an artist, they play some music by that artist and others like him/her.
Worth checking out

This is a site where you can upload audo OR video and share it (Probably where the 'meem' part comes from, even though it should spelled meme) I haven't fully checked this site out but it seems like an audio/video cross of youtube with odeo...
14
This site is geared towards classical music but I bet that's mostly because classical is just about the only "public domain" music they could get in mass quantities... Still the concept is nice.. browse through the music based on Era, composer, or the title of the song in question.
15
Musicbrainz is one of those handy applications that combines with a website to make it a vital part of your mp3 collection. What does it do? What doesn't it do? HA! (Ok enough with the cheesy sales pitch)...
Basically, it runs the song through a program to come up with some "TRM fingerprint"... then it checks those fingerprints against the database to ensure that your mp3 is properly tagged.
You can always update the database if the song you ran through it wasn't already there, and although they are almost as bad as wikipedia about rejecting submitted information, it's better than nothing. Just remember that without the tagger, this site isn't terribly useful, though you could use it passively to look through an artists discography and see what album it was, when it was released etc.

This could be a cool way to experiment with music...Unfortunately, nobody actually TRIES to make music with it....
17
I haven't fully tried this, but it's supposed to link you to all sorts of information about a track if you click on it..
Youtube videos, Wikipedia articles etc... Worth adding to the list anyway

18
This is apparently a flash utility to allow you to string together music samples to create your own (generic sounding) song... I wouldn't put too much effort into this but it Might be fun to play around with once in a while...
19
This is a great little search engine designed especially for mp3s. All you need to do is enter the search terms and hit enter and you'll be presented with a set of links to download from.
20
Another Web based search for music, but it also includes music videos on youtube. This one requires you to sign up for it in order to get the download link, but if you check your browser cache and know what you're looking for you'll find the mp3s there.
21
Find a song by typing the lyrics you DO know.... OF course I always just used google and did pretty well...
22
Another site that allows you to listen to music on the web. Supposedly though you can upload your library and listen to it anywhere streaming... and then listen to your friends music and stuff...
23
24
If you're a musician who is looking for a way to get to the public, this may be a good way to start. Also if you're a fan looking for a way to get to new music, this is ALSO a great way to check em out.
25
This site lets you see how to play a song by watching the band play each instrument. You can single one instrument out to watch it, slow it down and practice, then mute it to play alongside the other instruments.
Very nice...
Very nice...
26
This is a website where you can listen to and download some really nice relaxing music. Check it out.
27
Another site that lets you pick an artist and it plays music for you based on that. Sorta like Pandora but not as good.
28
Another MP3 search engine, but this one lets you actually download the song without any extra hassle.
29
This is a site that lists all the mashups with links to videos from Youtube. Some of it is cool, but I find that I'm not that big a fan of Mashups in general.
30
This is another search engine, but it also turns up videos, amazon.com links, and more...
Worth a look but it's still in beta and also if the subject is too obscure you probably won't find it here.

Ok, this is supposed to be a way to share your itunes library without having to upload the entire thing...
I'm not entirely sure how it's supposed to work, all I know is that you are supposed to export your library metadata and from there everyone is supposed to be able to listen to the same music you do...
Is it going to be cool or better than Last.fm? I dunno...

This is basically just an interface for google. they don't do any searches of their own. They just parse the extra gobbledygook into the search so you don't have to.
Still unless you're a master of typing in all that inurl:blah blah blah crap, you should give it a shot.

This is a great site for people who love music in video games. Basically, these people take the music in video games and remix them. Usually the result is epic greatness, especially when you hear an old 8-bit favorite given the symphonic treatment.
34
An awesome list of sites that can assist you in creating music...
35
This is a way to find music for that perfect occasion I suppose... basically, bands write shit and post it here, then people looking for music to license for whatever come here and find the shit the bands write and then everybody gets paid and is happy.
I wonder if it really works that way.

I guess if you know how to play guitar or are willing to sit and learn to play it note by note, this is a great resource. It not only shows you which string to play and which fret but gives you a good idea of the timing as well.
