The 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education triggered a seismic shift in American social life by outlawing centuries of racial segregation and discrediting long held beliefs in a variety of separate but equal social practices. The decision was the catalyst that set the US Civil Rights Movement in motion, mobilizing African Americans to press for full citizenship rights and mobilizing large numbers of ‘white’ Americans to defend or oppose segregation practices. One year after the 1954 decision, Rosa Parks refused to relinquish her seat in the middle of a crowding bus in Montgomery, Alabama, and the entire country became embroiled in one of the largest social movements to take place in America in the 20th century.
