To accommodate the DST change, most IT systems must be patched. Otherwise, timestamps will be off, and some applications my fail to work. For instance, if you synchronize your Windows Smartphone with Microsoft Exchange, and you want your calendar reminders to work, plan on applying patches or fixes to Windows XP, Windows 2003, Exchange 2003 & Windows Mobile. Otherwise, you may be late for that all-important TPS meeting.

At first blush it may seem like no big deal: clocks will move ahead by an hour three weeks earlier than usual this year. But for today’s networked businesses, the simple change could mean complex problems if IT shops aren’t prepared, industry experts say.

After a nice weekend I woke up to find a bunch of alarmist articles on how changing daylight savings time is going to mess up everyone’s Palm Pilots and cell phone minute plans and plunge us into the fear and despair of the whole Y2K era.

Since most applications have an internal clock and read time off of a network (i.e. cell phones) or have software written to update time changes automatically, these issues are most likely to be a matter of inconvenience for consumers, according Michael Gartenberg, vice president and research director of JupiterResearch.
