There is nothing more annoying than trying to use up your hard-earned frequent-flyer miles only to be told that the flight you want has no frequent flier seats available. Many airlines block out seats and dates for frequent-flyer eligibility. And their sites make it especially difficult to find out which flights have such seats. My experience is usually going to the Awards section of the airline site in question and spending an hour doing repeated searches until a flight pops up that doesn’t leave at 6 AM with two connections.

For those road warriors out there with a lot of frequent-flyer miles piling up, a saner way to figure out how to use those miles is ExpertFlyer. On the site, you can check regular seat availability for 400 airlines, and award availability for a smaller selection of major airlines. This feature was relaunched in April with an updated, easy-to-use tool. The U.S. airlines the award-seat feature supports are:

Actually, Amazon does have an automatic order / watcher system in place, but they only show you the link if the item is sold out. It's called marketplace preordering. You can still use it if you enter the address manually. I've been using it for ages.

Here is the magic address for marketplace preordering: [s1.amazon.co.uk]
Just change the last number (the item id) to the item you want to (pre)order.

I use the UK site, since I live in Europe, but this also works on dotcom.
Just change .co.uk --> .com

Interested in this item? Select your price and condition, and if we find a match we'll ship it to you directly!
Our sellers load used and refurbished inventory every day. Even though no used copy is available right now, you can get in line for a copy at the price and condition that works for you. Your credit card will only be charged when, and if, a suitable item becomes available. We'll forward your shipping address directly to the seller and the seller will ship the item to you. Thanks for your pre-order. We hope you get what you're looking for!

Google has just written a blog post introducing “Insights for Search”, an extension to its Google Trends and AdWords products that allows users to track keywords across different verticals, geographic locations, and time periods. According to the post, the new service is designed to help advertisers and marketers get a better understanding for user search behavior. You can access the Insights to Search homepage here (you’ll need to login to your Google account).

A whole lot more than just words passes between people who are talking, so a few simple conversational skills can help you recognize what's really being said and help you lead the discussion your way. Learn how to read body language and facial expressions, de-code euphemisms, ask sensitive questions, criticize constructively, get what you want in negotiations, cut off chatterboxes, and and more with our top 10 conversation hacks. Photo by PhillipC.

10. Feign sincerity with eye contact and repetition.

When you're just not feelin' it but you've got to look like you are, the Wired How-to wiki suggests ways you can feign sincerity. In short, make eye contact, echo what the person is saying to you back to them, and nod in understanding.

9. End a conversation with body language.

When that chatty co-worker just won't go away, use some of manager Brendan Connelley's techniques. My favorite is simply standing up (or crossing your arms, or speeding up to a "fast walk" to indicate it's time for that person to go and you're busy. In more desperate situations, grab your cell phone and say, "oh sorry, I've got to take this."

8. Ask sensitive questions indirectly to skip awkwardness.

When the info you need from someone is somewhat sensitive, check out journalist advice site MBToolbox's suggestions for asking delicate questions indirectly. Use the bluff ("the breakup must've been hard, huh,") or blame others ("so has anyone asked about your prison time?") or the indirect inquiry ("what year did you get divorced?") to broach sensitive topics with tight-lipped folks with more ease and less awkward silence.

7. Use silence to win arguments and nail a negotiation.

Lawyers and price hagglers know that a little silence can go a long way. When the other party offers a price, opt for a long pause to indicate hesitation, which might prompt them to go lower. In the case of arguments, stubborn, utter silence may frustrate the other person—but it'll also make you look a little bit more like the winner. (Even though it's evil.)

6. Soften critiques with the sandwich method.

When you need to critique someone—whether it's a co-worker's presentation or a spouse's choice of outfit—start with a compliment, then mention your critique, then end on a positive note. The "criticism hamburger" gets the message across but softens the blow.

5. Say "no" gently—or say "yes, but...."

When someone's asking you to do something you just don't want to—or don't have the time—there are ways to say "no" that are polite and respectful and won't burn any bridges. OnlineOrganizing.com offers 20 "scripts" for turning down a request, from "I'm in the middle of several projects right now" to "I'm not the right person for that job." (I've found that suggesting someone else offering a tip on the best way to proceed also helps a whole lot.) Master of attention-firewalling Merlin Mann says you can partially commit by qualifying your "yes" with specific boundaries around what you'll do (that also imply what you won't).

4. Ask the right questions to get the answers you need.

When you need information, the people that have it need some reason to help you. Whether you're posting a question on a tech support forum or asking a colleague for help, here are some ways you can master the art of asking to get the answers you need.

3. De-code office jargon.

Client want to "touch base"? Manager want to "get on the same page"? Corporate euphemisms translate into pretty strong words, and you'll navigate your career a whole lot better if you recognize the ones that mean "get off your ass." Career adviser Penelope Trunk offers a non-nonsense dictionary for parsing office-speak.

2. "Pace and lead" an irate person.

When you're dealing with someone who is absolutely freaking out—like a parent flipping out at the playground—use school administrator Bert Webb's "pace and lead" technique. Instead of remaining calm, match the other party's emotional intensity to show you're empathetic, then lead the complainant to a calmer level of discourse.

1. Become a human lie detector.

When you suspect someone isn't telling the whole truth, tune into their voice, eyes, and body language. Monster.com's Marty Nemko lists a few indicators that should trip your BS detector, like a sudden change in voice pitch, rate of speech, or "ums" and "ahs," a change in eye contact, and the position of the other person's body. Similarly, project manager Scott Berkun weighs in on how to detect bullshit.

Perhaps the greatest human behavior and communication hack is an awareness of what makes people tick. If you can offer someone something they want, they'll give you what you want in return.

What are your favorite conversational hacks and skills? Ever tried any of these techniques? Tell us about it in the comments.

(Tue Aug 19 16:48:34 2008)

I have no idea and I don't care. /I
just wanted to watch the show.I gotta run/ who knows?lying media.you know
what? I really need to finish this by...
:so what? what's the big deal? relax, (Shit happens).

a. 对方用的是media report,你就说: i am not sure if I believed
the report(the media crap). they are just jealous/media just wanted people
's attention/they also said Irap had WOMD.
b. 就说someone said
Phelps takes dope, do you believe so? I do not think so. you know what I
mean?
c. 说:so a 13 year-old-Chinese beat a 16-year-old
american. big deal. well, so she is youger, but still a winner, right?
limit is stupid. I heard a swimmer who is 44. from what i saw, the young
girls handled the pressure well.

I found that I could easily visit sites like slashdot, Google, or even this weblog, when adding a ?.jpg at the end of the url. The next logical step was to automate that. I downloaded Greasemonkey and wrote a 4 line script that would add ?.jpg to every link in a document. That way I was able to browse most sites without a hassle.

When you say cable I presume you mean UHF cable.
To get everything into the other room, get a scart splitter(1 input-2 outputs),one output will go to the tv as normal, the other will need to be converted to uhf.You can do this by buying a RF modulator but the cheapest way might be to use an old video recorder. So you could scart into the video recorder, set the channel to show the scart input(AV1) and the video would output what ever was going in through the scart, out through the UHF cable and that UHF cable could be run to anywhere you liked.
If you set it up correctly you could watch sat or dvd or normal tv in the other room(but only at UHF quality ofcourse)

Persuade People with Subconscious Techniques

The power of persuasion can get you far in this world, even if you're not in sales, and a few simple communication techniques can go a long way to get someone to agree with you. Tutorial site wikiHow runs down "subconscious" actions for persuading others, like framing, mirroring, timing, or even touching the person on the arm or shoulder. This list is similar to our previously posted (and controversial!) top 10 conversation hacks. How do you convince someone to come on over to your side in conversation? Let us know in the comments. My recommendation? Play dumb. Put on a bewildered expression, act as if you don't understand the joke, and ask your co-worker to explain it to you. He will not be able to explain why the joke is funny without evoking a racist stereotype. You can then question the veracity of this stereotype, thus pointing out the racism of the joke, without being confrontational and without humiliating your co-worker. Racist jokes rely on an unspoken, shared knowledge of racist stereotypes. Without the stereotypes, there is no humor.

Most New Car Buyers Just Want a Fair Deal...
But the fact remains - auto shoppers usually don't know whether they're getting a good deal or not, and this can be very frustrating. RealCarTips.com aims to solve the problem by showing real prices paid at new car dealerships. Armed with this information, car buyers can rest assured they're getting a fair deal.

(Sun Nov 2 13:03:12 2008)

  DOLCE & GABANA

  LOUIS VUITTON

  HUGO BOSS

  BROOKS BROTHERS

  Zegna
