The neighborhood where I live and teach is like this. I'm a member of the Park Slope Food Co-op and am lucky to get excellent produce at good prices, but most of my students' families are not. I see them eating a lot of products that use cornsyrup and tons of sugar; it's easy to see how this leads to a diabetic diet. In the few bodegas that have fruits and vegetables, the lettuce looks wilted and the apples are bruised. This must be because the bodega owners can't afford to replenish the produce on a regular basis.
