A cinematography technique whereby each film frame is captured at a rate much slower than it will be played back. When replayed at normal speed, time appears to be moving faster and thus lapsing. Time-lapse photography can be considered to be the opposite of high speed photography.

Scenic Time Lapse There are many natural events that lend themselves to time lapse photography with a digital still camera. Familiar subjects inlcude clouds, flowers opening, and seeds sprouting. Movements of people and traffic are also interesting.

Procedure Mount your camera on a tripod and frame the scene you wish to shoot. It’s best to fix the focus of the camera so it doesn’t need to refocus each exposure. You probably want to use auto exposure settings though, because the light may change over time. This can introduce difficulties though, because the camera may make some frames brighter than others.
