Do classic subjects alone or the blending of math, science and technology in a project-based environment prepare student's for the real world?

As a doctoral student in Technology Education I believe in 21st Century Learning. The problem I see, however, is the willingness and wanting to hang on to the old manual to industrial arts mentality. In order to move forward we must look at digital communications and maybe for those who can't let industrial arts go how about digital arts.
With that thought in mind does the framework for 21st Century Learning REALLY look like this (the diagram on the site) in school or is this really just some great vision that will never REALLY be implemented? And I'm not talking about using an electronic projector or computer in class!
Just curious about your thoughts!

21st Century Learning does not only take place in the classroom. This article speaks on how students are using different technology to create blogs as a medium for collaboration, expression, and writing. If appropriately organized, do you think blogging should be introduced to students for classroom activity including collaboration, journaling and reflection?

This article speaks about the 21st Century Learning Initiative. It presents it's vision and it's position on exactly what "a crisis in schools" really is-"a crisis in society's commitment to young people." Do you agree?

This is actually a website that identifies what is included in digital-age literacy. In this society it takes much more than the three so called "R's". Students are living through a time that is the digital age. We must prepare them for today and tomorrow.
This information breaks down what digital-age literacy includes in these categories: basic literacy, scientific literacy, economic literacy, technological literacy, visual literacy, information literacy, multicultural literacy, and global awareness.

This article speaks loud and clear about the concern of schooling preparation for 21st Century Learning. A nationwide poll of registered voters was take to find out their thoughts on how the American education system is preparing youth for life in the 21st century. I guess the question here to ask is are schools really staying abreast on the changes in technology? I'm sure funding, demographics and who knows what else plays a role in this. Is this why schools are failing? What do you think?

This site provides a wealth of information on a 21st Century Literacies Curriculum. The curriculum includes information, media, multicultural, and visual literacies. It includes information strategies and how to prepare for lifelong learning.

Dialogic literacy is often not included when listing information about 21st Century Skills. However, I think it plays a major role in the bringing together of all others. This literacy goes beyond just the sharing of ideas. It reshapes the mind, promotes deeper understanding, creates new knowledge and practices and of course increases one's ability to effectively communicate.

This article is the hallmark of articles. It asks the question "What do students really need to be learning today in order to be ready for an unpredictable future?" What's interesting here is it takes a look at the three "R's" to see how they traditionally measure up and how they should evolve into an "exclusively, digital and networked world."
