As one reads "Things Fall Apart", one can see how colonialization had its effects on all sectors of the community.  What was the role of the woman in precolonial Nigeria?

Just as the British affected Achebe's Igbo tribe, other groups did as well. What were some of the effects that missionaries had on this are and Christianity as well?

As we read the novel, Things Fall Apart, you will need to become accustomed to certain tribal rituals and customs.  What solidified the fole of a woman in her husband's family?  What would happen if the woman could not fulfill this responsibility?

According to Igbo custom, who is the first to eat the first yam at the cultural new yam festival?  Why is the festival so important?  You will see Okonkwo attend the same event in the novel.

Read the poem by Yeats.  In the lines of this poem, we find the title of Achebe's novel - Things Fall Apart.  Why do you suspect he chose the lines from this poem?  What does it mean?  What relationship will it have with themes from the text?

Read some reactions to Achebe's work and African folktales in general. From these reviews, do you find the novel interesting?  Why or why not?
