What is CHDK?

The Canon Hacker's Development Kit, aka CHDK, is a firmware enhancement that supports an impressive array of Canon digital cameras. I emphasize the enhancement aspect of CHDK because the tool is non-permanent and non-destructive, meaning that you load it onto your camera whenever you want to use it; CHDK makes no changes to your camera, and turning it off is simply a matter of restarting your camera. Installing CHDK involves copying a couple of files onto your camera's memory card; permanently removing it from your camera entails deleting those files. It's simple and powerful (sort of like hacking your router firmware) but even easier.

The Design Intellection blog describes how to use the =CONCATENATE("text", cell, "text") spreadsheet formula to turn a row of data into an HTML table row. On Friday, Kevin pointed out a web-based HTML table generator that's a simple, fast solution for small tables; but if your data's already in a spreadsheet and the word "concatenate" doesn't make you want to run screaming, this may be a better way to go.

Linksys Kiss Media Player 1600 makes out with Linux

I splashed out on a KISS 1600 media player the other day, hoping to stream music and videos from my PC to my TV in the living room. It ships with an application called PC-Link, which runs on your PC and streams your media over your network, but unsurprisingly this is Macindows only. Funny that, considering the Kiss 1600 itself runs Linux. Anyway, a quick search soon resulted in a few Linux applications that have been created to fill the gap. After almost-successfully trying PC-Link using Wine I settled on the cross-platform Kiss Now! from Nidaware. There are various other solutions available (see links below), but Kiss Now! is graphical, simple, and exactly what I was looking for. Most importantly, it works, but only after a little tinkering……

just noticed that the fan is loaded as a module, so it is very easy to shut it of and turn it on again
(if you want to turn of the led, it is done the same way)

to remove it:
rmmod wdc-fan

to load it again:
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.17.14/kernel/arch/arm/mach-oxnas/wdc-fan.ko

so, does anyone know how I can see the temp?

[edit] I also noticed /usr/local/wdc/heat-monitor when I ran ps aux
when I ran the heat-monitor from the terminal I got this output:

I have important information for those of us who have service with AT&T.

There is a more straightforward and easier way to get any AT&T or Cingular
GSM phone unlocked.

If you have had service already established for at least 90 days, then you (
and any other AT&T customers) can do the following:

1. Call 916-843-4685. This is AT&T International Customer Support and is
free from any active AT&T handset (it does not count against any night/
weekend/anytime minutes).

2. When you are connected to an customer service representative (CSR), tell
them that you are planning on traveling to either Asia or Europe and that
you would like to have the subsidy lock removed off your handset. If they
question you further, make something plausible up and stick to it.

3. Have your phone's IMEI number ready. The easiest way to get the IMEI
number is to dial *#06# on your handset. Your phone will then display the
number. Write it down and have it ready to tell the CSR in case he/she asks
for it.

4. If they approve of it, they will send a request for unlock and you should
have your code in under 5 days. If not, be polite, say thank you, hang up,
call back the number again and repeat until successful.

If your limit is $300, I would recommend the SD960 (IXUS 110). In spite of having a smaller CCD, it bits the old SD550 in practically all aspects:

It is much thinner, so it really fits in your pocket, the higher resolution (in spite of smaller CCD) shows (at least on the sample images) excellent detail and better noise performance, the macro range is better (down to 2 cm) and you can take long HD video sequences. But the most important advantage is that it has a wider-angle zoom (28 mm), which once you start using you will not be able to survive without.

The MSRP in the US is 329.99, but here in Germany it is already available for significantly less than the MSRP.

As an alternative you could consider the SD880 (IXUS 870). It is slightly thicker, does not support HD video and has an older CCD with 10 MP. It does however have the same zoom (and aperture) range as the newer SD960 (and the same macro range), which is in my opinion a great advantage over your previous camera.

In Germany the price difference between the two models is only around 25% so I would tend to prefer the newer model with the higher resolution, HD video and thinner size. However, if you can get the 870 for a much cheaper price, it is worth considering.

Linksys makes wireless routers called WRT54G and WRT54GS. They are nifty little diskless networking computers with a wireless card, and they pack a surprising amount of power for a low price. I started playing with WRTs late 2004 and quickly discovered that there was a complete Linux distribution for it, called OpenWRT. The Linksys software that comes with the device is also based on Linux, but OpenWRT packs a 'Flash File System', meaning you can create and change single files in the flash ROM of the device, instead of having to create a whole new 'disk image' every time you need to change one file. By 2005 I had built some of my own stuff and had a few things done that I wanted to share, hence I created this software repository.

An accesspoint that runs Linux. See OpenWrt Hardware. I used a Linksys WRT54GS. WRT54GS has 8MByte flash, double that of the WRT54G.
The OpenWrt firmwar. Download and install from OpenWrt. Use the "Boot-wait" option, to make sure you can recover if the firmware-upgrade goes wrong.
Telnet to the AP and add these sources to /etc/ipkg.conf. E.g.

This is a step for step guide for turning your ASUS WLxxxx linux-based wireless product, into a small php enabled web server.

Let's put the CHDK in the card

(for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003/2008)
Mac users should go to Mac FAQ
Linux users should get CHDK onto SD card and make SD card bootable

Please keep in mind that this method will erase all files from the card.

Connect the card reader to your [USB port].
Put the SD card in the card reader.
Open My Computer and verify that you can see the card unit. It will be a removable device. Put the mouse pointer over the icon, and see if the size matches your SD card's size. If not, check your card reader installation procedure. Don't go any further until you are sure you have this reader working and your card accessed.
Download CardTricks from Wiki or look Card Tricks thread and save it to a specific computer folder. Or just create one, if you wish. Locate the download folder and simply double click the file: Card Tricks will open.
Check the Auto box.
Card Tricks
Click the card stamp (below the Auto box) and select the card's drive unit.
Pay attention: is the drive corresponding to the previously identified card reader unit.
The Card Info & Selection section is updated now. Read and check one more time if it actually is your card: the card size is a good sign. If it has no size (not formated) and you just bought your card, it's positive feedback: you picked your SD card correctly.
Click the Format as FAT button, read and accept the notice. Card Tricks will format your card in the best way for CHDK. Wait until it ends.
Click the Make Bootable button, read and accept the notice. Card Tricks will prepare your card for camera autoload.
Click Download CHDK. Your browser will open at the CHDK official download page. Pick your camera model's ZIP file. Just remember where you saved it!
It is possible that there is more than one file per camera: Choose which one by referencing your camera's firmware version, go back here if you are unsure which version you need.
Click the CHDK->Card button, select the ZIP file you downloaded, confirm and wait until the unzipping message disappears.
Remove the card from the card reader.
Lock the card! (the little plastic switch on the side of the SD card)
CHDK splash screen
Your card is now autoload and ready to use.
Place the write protected card back in camera and turn on. If everything went right the CHDK splash screen will blink.
