Today marks the release of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. One brand new feature of gutsy is that tracker, a desktop indexer like google dektop, runs by default. Tracker also supports taxonomy for your files and folders but this feature is not yet integrated into gnome. But wait…you can have it anyway in a few simple steps:
- Install python-nautilus package:
sudo aptitude install python-nautilus
- Download “Tags-Tab”-Extension and move it to .nautilus/python-extensions (you may have to creat this folder)
- Restart Nautilus:
Alt+F2 and type in killall nautilus
Now you can start tagging files and folders. Simply right-click on the item you want to tag, go to the “Tag”-tap and insert your tags.
- Setup Searchfolders
In order to have your tagged items on your hand when ever you need them, simply go to nautilus click on the search button and type:
tag:[tagname]
Then go to File->Save search…
Voila, now you can start reorganizing your desktop with tags. I “implemented” some sort of GTD-System with a “next”-tag for files I want to work on in the next days.
Update 29.10.07: User if this did not work for you, you should try to make both the .py and .pyc files in the
extensions directory executable.

Key Features
- Supports both free text search (like Beagle/Google) as well as structured searches using RDF Query.
- Responds in real time to filesystem changes, automaticaly keeping its metadata database up to date.
- Extracts file contents as plain text and indexes them.
- Can provide thumbnailing on the fly if a thumbnail does not currently exist.
- Uses multilingual word stemmers to help find more relevant results. For example a search for motorbikes (plural) will also return results relevant to motorbike (singular).
Tagging
Tags are one-word labels that you can assign to any file to help you categorize and remember them. - You can assign as many tags to a file as you like and rename or delete the tags later.
Tracker is a desktop indexer, though it might be easier to just think of it as a desktop search tool. It indexes your files–all types–using file contents and metadata. What separates it from the other popular linux desktop search tool, beagle, is that Tracker allows you to tag files. Yup, that’s right, you can tag your files and search by tag now! Tracker includes a command line and gui tool for searching. If that weren’t enough, there are other frontends, such as Affinity-search, Catfish, and even Nautilus.

Change log 1.1
*Google Desktop Only
The SearchSpy indexing process is done only when your system is idle. It won't blame you. Plus even you don't like SearchSpy and want to use another spotlight clone without GDS, the indexing system should work too.
How is it possible? My app features a smartly done Indexer, that can parse results as a XML File. This is the same Google Desktop does, meaning that any well done GDS based app can recognize the results.
- A nice Color Picker (thanks to Chris Kite for the idea). SearchSpy is skinned in different way. You don't need to spend hours creating pictures and skin files. Change the whole app color by simply dragging a slider!
- Smart and moveable Search Menu that adapts itself to the screen position. If you want it on top, simply drag the menu, The next time you search, results will apear in the right place. Works for both on top and on bottom positions.
- No needing for icons! SearchSpy will get them from windows to you.
-As much results groups as you want (even a mac can't do this
). With SearchSpy, you can create and destroy the search file type groups.- All working filters in the main window. (Yes, they finally work in an Spotlight clone
)- Shadows (without need of any external app).
- Drag and drop results from the menu to any app!
- Google Talk Style hints with information about files.
- ObjectBar suport (just open the app with the Parameter -noicon).
When Tracker was proposed for GNOME 2.18 I was one of its staunchest supporters, arguing that a GNOME wide unified metadata storage system would enable a richer desktop experience, and take GNOME beyond its competition. Tracker did not make the cut for GNOME 2.18, and will no doubt be proposed again for GNOME 2.20.
To help people see the potential of a GNOME desktop using Tracker I have been working on two projects for the past little while. Both of these are components of my larger vision of a metadata rich GNOME desktop. These initial attempts just focus on making tagging [1] a more consistent experience for all GNOME apps. Consider the examples and screenshots (for a file called nice) below;
- Freedesktop emblem spec
Allows desktop file managers and indexers to present a list of predefined emblems and tags to the user, and allows these predefined emblems/tags to be installed by third party developers in a consistent manner. - Tracker Nautilus Integration
Nautilus using tracker for storage of all tags and emblems. - libtracker-gtk
A bunch of gtk widgets that application authors can use to add tracker functionality to their application.
