Grade 4 Science
- forests take up one-third of the Earth's land area, accounts for two-thirds of the Earth's plant life, and contain about 70% of the Earth's carbon
- there are three major types of forests:
- tropical- located near the equater and have the greatest diversity of species
- temperate-located in eastern North America, northeastern Asia, and western and central Europe. Temperate forests can be characterized by their distinct winter seasons. Inhabitants include animals such as squirrels,deer, bobcats and black bears.
- and lastly Boreal forest (taiga) located in the broad belt of Eurasia and North America: two-thirds in Siberia with the rest in Scandinavia, Alaska, and Canada. seasons include short,moist and moderately warm summers and long, cold, and dry winters. Inhabitants include moose, lynx ,fox, and bats, among others.
