States are required to send Congress reports on the quality of water in the state.  The first step is for the state to record how a particular body of water is being used. This is called "registering" a water body.

This report contains hard data.  You'll need to find the basin and HUC information and then use the keys at the beginning of the document to decode the "use categories".

This report includes information about how the state measures water quality and what we have learned about our water quality in the last two years.  There are comparisons between previous reports and the information most recently gathered.
10
If the state determines a body of water is polluted (called "impaired"), the federal government requires it to develop a plan for improving the water quality.  These plans are called TMDLs for Total Maximum Daily Load.
