Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Sura in the southwestern part of Egypt. Written references date back up to 2000 B.C. In 1538 Nicolas Wynman, German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book. Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly using breaststroke. The front crawl, then called the trudgen was introduced in 1873 by John Arthur Trudgen

The International Swimming Hall of Fame has announced its 2007 group of inductees. The list includes two swimmers, one diver, one synchronized swimmer, one water polo player, and two coaches. The honorees will be inducted into the ISHOF on 12 May, 2007 at the annual induction ceremonies in Fort Lauderdale.

What's the most effective way to breathe when swimming freestyle? Is there any benefit to breathing on both sides?Practice breathing on both sides by taking a breath every three strokes. Breathing on your weaker side will feel odd at first but become more comfortable with practice
