The LG Venus has two front screens, the lower of which is a touch screen with haptic vibration feedback. The beauty of having a touchscreen for navigation is that the buttons can change to match whatever feature you’re using. For example, if you’re using the MP3 player, there will be a play, pause, stop, forward and backward button. Or from the main menu the buttons will change to your favourite short cuts such as messages, address book and calendar. The Venus also has a normal numeric keypad, it’s a slider phone. It has Bluetooth, email, a 2 megapixel camera and a music player supporting all common music formats. Memory can be expanded to 8GB using a microSD card.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 is an easy-to-use, good-looking device that gives you access to your emails and the web while you're on the move. With a BlackBerry, emails appear on your screen as soon as they are sent, just as you’d receive a text message. Your mobile phone becomes a copy of your email inbox. It’s easy to set up so that it used your existing email address. You can write emails using the QWERTY keyboard and then slip your BlackBerry back into your bag or your pocket. The Pearl 8110 weighs just 91g, it's one of the latest BlackBerry devices and is our recommendation. It has all the usual BlackBerry functionality plus GPS satellite navigation built-in too. A pearl-like trackball makes it simple to select the phone's features and to browse the web. It also has a very good 2 megapixel camera with flash, a web browser, voice control, stereo Bluetooth and a handy 3.5mm stereo audio jack socket for listening to your music collection.

The LG KF700 Virgo is a sliderphone with a large touchscreen and a jog dial for navigation. LG claims the KF700 is the world's first phone to offer three input methods. Users can choose from touchscreen, jog dial or keypad, whichever suits them the best. Similar to the HTC Touch or Apple iPhone, users can navigate through menu options by swiping a finger across the screen. A dial on the back of the phone lets users scroll through six pre-selected features by controlling a virtual dial on screen. The dial can also be used to scroll through contact lists, web pages and emails. A traditional numeric keypad slides out from the bottom of the phone. The 3 inch display is impressive with a resolution of 240x480 pixels. The graphical interface is similar to that on the LG Viewty. The LG KF700 has plenty of technology packed in too. The HTC Touch Pro is similar in specification to the HTC Touch Diamond and targets power users who require a physical keyboard for easier text entry. Powered by the highly customisable Windows Mobile 6.1 OS the HTC Touch Pro has a clever TouchFLO 3D interface. This allows your photos and music to be searched as you rotate the phone, or via finger gestures on it’s impressive screen. The screen itself is a 2.8 inch TFT-LCD with full VGA resolution meaning you have plenty of room to view pictures from the onboard 3.2 megapixel camera. Browsing the web on this phone is great too as the large touchscreen is complimented by broadband like speed thanks to the HSDPA and Wi-fi data connectivity. Built-in GPS completes the impressive feature list.
HTC Touch Pro available as SIM Free - contract deals to follow
The HTC Touch Pro can now be pre-ordered in the UK as a SIM free handset.
The HTC Touch Pro is the big daddy to the HTC Touch Diamond and has been eagerly anticipated by the Windows Mobile smartphone community as it has everything the HTC Touch Diamond does as well as a full slide out Qwerty keyboard, larger battery and a memory card slot. The slide out QWERTY keyboard has 5 rows of keys to make light work of typing-intensive tasks like composing email or working on Microsoft Office® documents - perfect for when your day takes a serious turn.
The HTC Touch Pro was codename the HTC Raphael during development and will be known as the MDA Vario IV on the T Mobile network with other networks yet to confirm their names.
The HTC Touch Pro has a 2.8-inch VGA touch screen providing four times the resolution of most smart devices, making email, documents and web pages sharper and easier to work with than ever before.
HTC’s rich, touch-responsive interface, TouchFLO 3D, provides a stunningly intuitive way to zip through common tasks like messaging, calendar checks or making calls. Delve a little deeper to find that playing media files, searching for contacts and surfing the web are also responsive to your touch.
The web browser puts the full Internet in the palm of your hand. Websites look just like they do on a PC, and TouchFLO 3D makes it easy to pan around and zoom in on exactly the information you’re looking for. If you need a wide screen, simply tilt the Touch Pro sideways and the page switches to landscape view.
High speed connectivity will keep you in touch with colleagues and contacts wherever you are. Integrated GPS can be used with maps software for a full turn-by-turn satellite navigation experience.
Built-in Wi-Fi and TV-out functionality mean you can hook up to the local wireless hot spot to surf, then deliver the perfect PowerPoint® presentation without a laptop in sight.
The HTC Touch Pro isn’t as pocketable as the HTC Touch diamond due to it’s Qwerty keyboard but it’s dimensions (w x h x d): 51 x 102 x 18.05 millimetres , 2 x 4 x 0.7 inches and weight of 165 grams (battery included) still makes this handset the best all round Windows mobile device out currently, in our opinion.
The only other challenger could be the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 which is due to hit the UK sometime in September / October according to the latest reports…

New Nokia N96 vs Nokia N95 8GB

N96 now available to pre-order. Stock due 1st October.
The Nokia N96 has the same dual slide design as the N95. It’s a very similar phone with the same 5 megapixel camera, 2.8 inch screen, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and excellent multimedia functions. It has 3G, HSPDA and GPS with Nokia Maps and Geo-tagging. It has the Nokia web browser with Mini Map and an RSS reader. The N96 is slightly longer and wider than the N95 8GB but is 3mm thinner, so pretty much the same size.
The name suggests that the N96 might be a successor to the N95 8GB, but in reality it’s more of an alternative specification. The Nokia N96 has 16GB internal memory which can be expanded to a huge 24GB using an 8GB memory card. This is the N96’s main advantage over the N95 8GB and the biggest reason why people might choose the N96. Other minor improvements include a newer version of the Symbian S60 OS, v9.3 as opposed to v9.2 and the addition of RDS to the built-in FM radio. The N96 also has a DVB-H TV receiver but this is of no use in the UK as we don’t have any DVB-H TV broadcasts.
On the downside, the N96 battery offers only 3 hours 40 minutes talk time between charges, whereas the N95 8GB has 6 hours talk time. The dual ARM processor on the N96 is not as powerful as the N95 8GB and it lacks a 3D graphics accelerator, although most users won’t notice any difference. The N96 also loses a few insignificant features such as infrared, nothing worth losing sleep over.
So which is the best phone? The N96 has that huge memory, which is definitely an advantage in a multimedia phone. In terms of design the N96 is more modern, it looks similar to other new Nseries phones. But the N95 8GB looks meaner and more exclusive, in fact it probably looks the more expensive of the two. Which leads me on to the price, you’ll pay around £200 more for the new Nokia N96. Compare deals on both phones and decide for yourself.

Nokia 5310 Comes With Music

The new all-you-can-eat music service from Nokia has been launched in the UK this week.
So how does it work? You buy a Nokia 5310 music phone on PAYG for £130 and you’re given a 12 month subscription to Nokia’s Comes With Music service. You can browse the Nokia music library on the Internet and download as many tracks as you want to your PC. You can then transfer tracks to your phone using the supplied data cable. The music is DRM protected, which means it can only be played on your computer or on your Comes With Music phone. You can’t copy them to your iPod or burn them to a CD.
If your computer breaks then whatever you already downloaded can be downloaded again to a different computer. If you accidentally delete or lose your music you can download it again for up to two years after your 12 month subscription has ended.
For £130 it’s very good value for money. There are millions of tracks available, mostly mainstream chart music from past to present. The Nokia 5310 is a decent phone too. Available now with a range of seven different colour combinations.
