On this page, find the 2 rows of at the top of the page which list sites for the University. When you put your cursor over "Libraries", a grey row will appear below. For your search you will Click on Infohawk/Catalogs.
If you wish to explore the pages we visit on this tour, you may return to Trailfire by using the window's BACK button until the trail reappears.
For now, click on the arrow in this box to go to slide 2.
There are two places on the black row at the top of the page that we will visit.
To find databases, you will click on "Indexes and Abstracts". To search full text ejournals online, you will click on "Full Text".
We will search databases first. For your serach, you will put your cursor on "Indexes and Abstracts". When the yellow drop down box appears, you will click on the first option, "General Indexes".
Remember, if you decide to explore the current site, you can return to the Trail by using the browser's BACK button until the tour box reappears.
For now, click the right arrow to go to slide 3.
This page lists databases on which you can search for journal articles, books, etc. Each listing in Bright Blue Bold letters is a different database. You must list the database you use in any references, so remember to make a note of where you find your information.
We are going to search the Google Scholar database. For your search you will scroll down to "Google Scholar" and click on that. For now, click the right arrow to go to slide 4.
This page shows you an example of how an entry in this database will look.
When you click on the Google Icon at the top center of the page, you will begin your search. Click on the right arrow for slide 5.
At this point you will be asked to enter your university username and password.
If you lose the blue trailfire box after entering your ID and password, use the "back" button on your browser window until you hit a page that has a trailfire box appear. When you move forward through the tour using the trailfire box, it should take you through the password protected pages without re-entering your password again.
The ease of the Google Scholar site is that you can enter your search information in the same way you do a general Google search online. If you want to specify your search criteria by date, etc, you can do this by clicking on the Advanced Scholar Search at the Right.
For this search, I entered "Organization and Community Practice in Social Work" in the Google Search box and clicked "search".
Click the arrow to proceed to slide 7.
If you look at the first entry, "Knowledge and Organization: A Social-Practice Perspective", you will see that right after the title appears, UIowa Infolink: Full Text....these are what you want to find to save time. This means that you are going to be able to access the entire article electronically from this page. Click on the UIowa Infolink Full Text icon for that first article.
This is the Infolink page for that one article. This shows you all the databases in which this article is availabe through the University. On your own, you would click the yellow circle that says "Go" after the first entry.
For this tour, click the right arrow to proceed to the next slide.
A new window has popped up on your computer. When you use this infolink process, it is common to have a site like this list options for downloading an article on the right. You want to search for where a page will say PDF download, or Full Text download, etc.
Sometimes you will reach a page which says you must pay money to subscribe to a site before you can access an article. This means you have been directed to a database to which the University of Iowa does not subscribe. Exit such a database and do another search until you find the article on a different database.
If you click on "Full Text (PDF)" at the top of the right column, it will download the complete article in PDF form onto your computer.
I suggest scanning the abstract of the article first. If you think you might possibly use it, save it to your computer or pen/flash drive, and make a note of the database and date that you found this article.
Trailfire will not leave comments on PDF sites so we are going to go back to the Infohawk first page and scan Full Text articles on the U of Iowa Library page.
This is a good site to use if you have seen an article listed in a journal, but cannot get to that article through any database. The journal might be electronically available through this page.
When you do your own search, you will write the name of the journal for which you want to search in the box marked "Title". For this exercise, I typed in "Social Work Practice".
Proceed to the slide 11.
Below you will see all the journals that include the words "social work practice" in their title. If you click on the title in Red, it will take you to an index for that specific journal.
For this tour I clicked on "Journal of Social Work Practice".
Proceed to slide 12.
If you scroll down this page, you will find all the volumes listed for this journal. Hopefully when you saw an article elsewhere, you wrote down the Volume and Issue number, and page if available. You will search first by VOLUME, then ISSUE, and finally PAGE NUMBER.
For this tour I clicked on Volume 21, Issue 3.
If you wish to try out links on this page, you can return to the Trailfire tour at any time by using your Browser's BACK button.
Now proceed to the last slide.
When you scroll down the page, you will see listed all articles as they appear in the journals. Sometimes online journals will not post all articles that appeared in the hardcopy of that journal. To retrieve an article and save it, you will click on the Bold blue type of the article you wish to save.
Remember, if you click on any link on this page, you can return to the Trailfire tour by clicking your browser's BACK button.
That is the end of the Infohawk tour.
