About this trail:
The Internet is changing the way we do a lot of things. This is a highlight of a few sites that are leading the way in changing how we lend money. They are not Web 2.0 in the sense of being user-generated, but in that they are connecting us to people in ways previously unthought of.

I thought it would be good to start with a non-profit. Kiva allows you to loan money to indigent business owners in devoloping countries. They loan the money through MicroFinance Institutions, and then you are paid back after 4-16 months, whenever the business owner is able to pay back the loan.

Some friends make charitable lending inevitable - you know the people I'm talking about, that friend who is "sure they paid you back for that already." BillMonk is a great way to avoid awkward collections by keeping track of friendly debts in one place.

We move from charity to friendly borrowing to profit. Prosper.com is an eBay type marketplace for loans. Private lenders lend money to private borrowers. By cutting out the bank as a middleman lenders can make greater interest on their money, while borrowers lower their rates. Great site.
